    <sub-title lang="fr">Patrimoine du monde — Monastère · Arménie</sub-title>
<desc lang="fr">Sanahin was a prominent monastery in the region. It was famous as a school of illuminators and calligraphers. Here was a college of religion, philosophy, and science during the 12-13th centuries. The complex comprises five churches, two gavits, a theologi&quot;&amp;&quot;cal college and book depository, a bell tower, and other structures; it is encircled by a fortified wall, making it a formidable fortress in times of attack. Built into the nature that surrounds it, Sanahin has a fluctuating asymmetry, with all the buildi&quot;&amp;&quot;ngs coming together to form an organic whole. Founded by Queen Khosrovanush in 966, the magnificent Amenaprkich (All Savior) Church was once topped with a vast dome surrounded by two-tiered annexes. After numerous earthquakes, the crown was replaced by a &quot;&amp;&quot;lower one, and the walls widened and were reinforced with arches. One remnant of the original walls is the monumental sculpture of the Queen’s sons holding up a church model – the first such bas-relief in Armenian history! The college had many notable cal&quot;&amp;&quot;ligraphers, artists, and philosophers studied there.</desc>

    <title lang="fr">Monastère de Tatev, Arménie</title>
    <sub-title lang="fr">Patrimoine du monde — Monastère · Arménie</sub-title>
<desc lang="fr">We are located in Armenia. Here, 30 km from Goris, one of the largest temple complexes in the country is the Tatev Monastery or simply Tatev. Chronicles say that a pagan temple in previous centuries occupied the right bank of the Vorotan River. The advent&quot;&amp;&quot; of Christianity lost its former significance in the 9th century AD. e. gave way to a temple with porches. The construction of the monastery complex stretched for hundreds of years and was completed only in the 13th century. The name &quot;&quot;Tatev&quot;&quot; is translat&quot;&amp;&quot;ed from the Armenian language as &quot;&quot;to give wings.&quot;&quot; Several variants are explaining the origin of this name. According to the first legend, the master who built the monastery, having finished the work, went to the very edge of the gorge and said: &quot;&quot;Ogni, &quot;&amp;&quot;Surb, ta tev&quot;&quot; - &quot;&quot;May the Holy Spirit send wings!&quot;&quot; After that, he crossed himself and rushed down the cliff. The Holy Spirit gave the great master wings, and he was able to fly away unharmed. The second version of the name &quot;&quot;Tatev&quot;&quot; is associated with t&quot;&amp;&quot;he name of Eustateos. Eustateos was a disciple of the Apostle Fadeus. He preached the Christian faith in Armenia, for which he was martyred at this very place. Later, in the 4th century, a temple was built on the site of the saint&#x27;s burial, which was cons&quot;&amp;&quot;ecrated by Gregory the Illuminator himself. Even now, behind the old monastery walls, you can see the ruins of that very first Tatev temple.</desc>

    <title lang="fr">Harichavank, Arménie</title>
    <sub-title lang="fr">Patrimoine du monde — Arménie</sub-title>
<desc lang="fr">The Harichavank is 7th century Armenian monastery located near the village of Harich in the Shirak Province of Armenia. The village is 3 km southeast of the town of Artik. Harichavank known as one of the most famous monastic centers in Armenia and it was &quot;&amp;&quot;especially renowned for its school and scriptorium. Archaeological excavations of 1966 indicate that Harich was in existence during the 2nd century BC, and was one of the more well known fortress towns in Armenia. The oldest part of this Armenian monaster&quot;&amp;&quot;y is the Church of St. Gregory the Enlightener ,it is a domed structure that is usually placed in the category of so-called &quot;&quot;Mastara-style&quot;&quot; churches. The founding date of the monastery is unknown, but probably it was built no later than the 7th century, &quot;&amp;&quot;when St. Gregory was erected. The Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God that dominates the monastic complex was built by the orders of Zakare Zakarian, Amirspasalar and Prince who ruled Eastern Armenia in the 13th century together with his brother Ivane Zak&quot;&amp;&quot;arian. Prince Zakare started the Cathedral after he bought Harich from a family representing the Pahlavuni dynasty. The Cathedral is a cruciform church with two-story sacristies in each of the four extensions of the building. The tall 20-hedral drum of th&quot;&amp;&quot;e cupola is of original style. Initially tent-roofed, it acquired triple columns on its facets and large rosettes in the piers which, together with platbands, form an unusual decorative girder around the middle of the drum height. Later, the cupola drum o&quot;&amp;&quot;f the Gandzasar Monastery was decorated in the same way. Haritchavank’s Cathedral belongs to the category of &quot;&quot;Gandzasar-style&quot;&quot; ecclesiastical edifices that were built approximately at the same time in different parts of Armenia, and were endowed with si&quot;&amp;&quot;milar compositional and decorative characteristics.</desc>
